New resource helps clients and consumers understand the mental health parity law
by Public Relations Staff
October 28, 2009 — The American Psychological Association (APA) Practice Directorate has produced a new online resource to help your clients and other consumers understand the new mental health parity law that takes effect on January 1, 2010. APA members and consumers can download the fact sheet "How Does the New Mental Health Parity Law Affect My Insurance Coverage?"
The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which was signed into law in the fall of 2008, requires insurance companies to cover mental and physical health services equally. The law is designed to help improve access to appropriate treatment for millions of Americans suffering from mental health disorders.
You also can use this material in various ways with local media and community outreach. If you have a website or produce a regular e-newsletter or blog, include an article about the new parity law taking effect in January and direct readers to the APA Help Center content (link provided above). Arm your patients with the information by providing copies in office waiting areas. If you are scheduled to make a presentation to a community group, mention the parity law and our online educational material.
