A unique opportunity to decrease your student debt

August 27, 2009 — Licensed psychologists with outstanding student debt who are currently working or interested in working in underserved communities are eligible to apply for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program.

This program offers up to $50,000 toward qualifying educational loan debt in exchange for two years of service in a high-need community. Additional funding may be available for psychologists who stay in a community site beyond two years.

The NHSC has recently received a huge budget increase. With nearly $200 million available for loan repayment, the Corps is trying to increase significantly the number of NHSC clinicians. Because of the nature of the funding, all of the loans must be disbursed by the end of Fiscal Year 2010 (September 30, 2010).

This funding provides an unprecedented opportunity for psychologists with educational loans to significantly decrease their debt. Practice opportunities are available in urban and rural communities. For more information, check out the NHSC website.

The APA Practice Directorate has developed the NHSC Primer for Licensed Psychologists to help interested psychologists figure out if they are eligible and apply for the loan repayment.
