Physician definition legislation for psychology introduced
On September 16th Representative Janice Schakowsky (D-IL) introduced legislation (H.R. 6147) that would treat clinical psychologists as physicians for purposes of furnishing clinical psychologist services under the Medicare program. The bill accomplishes this by including clinical psychologists in the Medicare "physician" definition, which already includes a number of other non-physician health care professionals. The introduction of this legislation is a direct reflection of the efforts of grassroots psychologists and the hard work of the APAPO Government Relations staff. Our efforts will now turn to getting a Senate sponsor, bipartisan support for the bill, and final passage in the House and Senate. APA has sent a letter of support and thanks to Representative Schakowsky.
